To move quickly
Fixed firmly in place
One of the most quietly vicious contranyms in the English language. Move fast. Think fast. Be fast. Women are constantly told to accelerate — to be quick learners, quick responders, quick to forgive, quick to adapt.
But the moment we become too fast — too ambitious, too loud, too independent — the second meaning kicks in. We are told to hold fast. Stay fast. Remain fixed in our proper place.
The word reveals the trap with cruel elegance. Female speed is only virtuous when it serves someone else’s momentum. Otherwise, we must stay fast — immovable, steadfast, holding the line while everyone else sprints past.
English doesn’t just have contradictions. It has speed limits that only apply to certain drivers.
“The speed limit that only applies to certain drivers.”
