TABLE

verb
I.

To present for discussion

II.

To set aside indefinitely

In meetings, someone says “Let’s table this discussion.”

Half the room hears: We should discuss this now. The other half hears: We will never speak of this again.

This is bureaucratic gaslighting at its finest. The word lets those in power appear collaborative while quietly killing the conversation. Especially useful when women raise issues of equity, harassment, or unpaid labor.

Your Classics brain notes the Roman tabula — the writing tablet, the place where things are set down and made official. Your Gender Studies brain notes who usually gets tabled.

The table was always a surface of power. The question is simply who gets to sit at it, and who gets left on it.
